Femtosecond Electron Diffraction Reveals Local Disorder and Local Anharmonicity in Thermoelectric SnSe.

In addition to long-range periodicity, local disorder, with local structures deviating from the average lattice structure, dominates the physical properties of phonons, electrons, and spin subsystems in crystalline functional materials. Experimentally characterizing the 3D atomic configuration of such a local disorder and correlating it with advanced functions remains challenging. Using a combination of femtosecond electron diffraction, structure factor calculations, and time-dependent density functional theory molecular dynamics simulations, the static local disorder and its local anharmonicity in thermoelectric SnSe are identified exclusively. The ultrafast structural dynamics reveal that the crystalline SnSe is composed of multiple locally correlated configurations dominated by the static off-symmetry displacements of Sn (≈0.4 Å) and such a set of locally correlated structures is termed local disorder. Moreover, the anharmonicity of this local disorder induces an ultrafast atomic displacement within 100 fs, indicating the signature of probable THz Einstein oscillators. The identified local disorder and local anharmonicity suggest a glass-like thermal transport channel, which updates the fundamental insight into the long-debated ultralow thermal conductivity of SnSe. The method of revealing the 3D local disorder and the locally correlated interactions by ultrafast structural dynamics will inspire broad interest in the construction of structure-property relationships in material science.

On the Role of Nuclear Motion in Singlet Exciton Fission: The Case of Single‐Crystal Pentacene

Singlet exciton fission (SF), the formation of two triplet excitons from one singlet exciton, involves electronic, nuclear, and spin degrees of freedom as well as their couplings. Despite almost 60 years of research on this process, a complete microscopic understanding is still missing. One important open question concerns the role of nuclear motion in SF. In this perspective, recent results on the exciton dynamics are related to the structural dynamics of single‐crystal pentacene and how they provide insights into that open question is shown. To probe the electronic dynamics, orbital‐resolved measurements of the electronic structure are carried out using time‐ and angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy. With femtosecond electron diffraction and with ab initio computations, the complementary nuclear dynamics is tracked. The results from both techniques are summarized, and how they relate to each other is discussed. Then, remaining open questions are outlined and potential routes are identified to tackle them, hopefully guiding future studies.

Direct Observation of Ultrafast Lattice Distortions during Exciton–Polaron Formation in Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

The microscopic origin of slow hot-carrier cooling in lead halide perovskites remains debated and has direct implications for applications. Slow hot-carrier cooling of several picoseconds has been attributed to either polaron formation or a hot-phonon bottleneck effect at high excited carrier densities (>1018 cm-3). These effects cannot be unambiguously disentangled with optical experiments alone. However, they can be distinguished by direct observations of ultrafast lattice dynamics, as these effects are expected to create qualitatively distinct fingerprints. To this end, we employ femtosecond electron diffraction and directly measure the sub-picosecond lattice dynamics of weakly confined CsPbBr3 nanocrystals following above-gap photoexcitation. While we do not observe signatures of a hot-phonon bottleneck lasting several picoseconds, the data reveal a light-induced structural distortion appearing on a time scale varying between 380 and 1200 fs depending on the excitation fluence. We attribute these dynamics to the effect of exciton-polarons on the lattice and the slower dynamics at high fluences to slower sub-picosecond hot-carrier cooling, which slows down the establishment of the exciton-polaron population. Further analysis and simulations show that the distortion is consistent with motions of the [PbBr3]- octahedral ionic cage, and closest agreement with the data is obtained for Pb-Br bond lengthening. Our work demonstrates how direct studies of lattice dynamics on the sub-picosecond time scale can discriminate between competing scenarios proposed in the literature to explain the origin of slow hot-carrier cooling in lead halide perovskites.

Observation of Multi-Directional Energy Transfer in a Hybrid Plasmonic-Excitonic Nanostructure.

Hybrid plasmonic devices involve a nanostructured metal supporting localized surface plasmons to amplify light-matter interaction, and a non-plasmonic material to functionalize charge excitations. Application-relevant epitaxial heterostructures, however, give rise to ballistic ultrafast dynamics that challenge the conventional semiclassical understanding of unidirectional nanometal-to-substrate energy transfer. Epitaxial Au nanoislands are studied on WSe2 with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and femtosecond electron diffraction: this combination of techniques resolves material, energy, and momentum of charge-carriers and phonons excited in the heterostructure. A strong non-linear plasmon-exciton interaction that transfers the energy of sub-bandgap photons very efficiently to the semiconductor is observed, leaving the metal cold until non-radiative exciton recombination heats the nanoparticles on hundreds of femtoseconds timescales. The results resolve a multi-directional energy exchange on timescales shorter than the electronic thermalization of the nanometal. Electron-phonon coupling and diffusive charge-transfer determine the subsequent energy flow. This complex dynamics opens perspectives for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications, while providing a constraining experimental testbed for state-of-the-artmodelling.

Bidirectional phonon emission in two-dimensional heterostructures triggered by ultrafast charge transfer.

Photoinduced charge transfer in van der Waals heterostructures occurs on the 100 fs timescale despite weak interlayer coupling and momentum mismatch. However, little is understood about the microscopic mechanism behind this ultrafast process and the role of the lattice in mediating it. Here, using femtosecond electron diffraction, we directly visualize lattice dynamics in photoexcited heterostructures of WSe2/WS2 monolayers. Following the selective excitation of WSe2, we measure the concurrent heating of both WSe2 and WS2 on a picosecond timescale-an observation that is not explained by phonon transport across the interface. Using first-principles calculations, we identify a fast channel involving an electronic state hybridized across the heterostructure, enabling phonon-assisted interlayer transfer of photoexcited electrons. Phonons are emitted in both layers on the femtosecond timescale via this channel, consistent with the simultaneous lattice heating observed experimentally. Taken together, our work indicates strong electron-phonon coupling via layer-hybridized electronic states-a novel route to control energy transport across atomic junctions.

Photoinduced Ultrafast Transition of the Local Correlated Structure in Chalcogenide Phase-Change Materials.

Revealing the bonding and time-evolving atomic dynamics in functional materials with complex lattice structures can update the fundamental knowledge on rich physics therein, and also help to manipulate the material properties as desired. As the most prototypical chalcogenide phase change material, Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5} has been widely used in optical data storage and nonvolatile electric memory due to the fast switching speed and the low energy consumption. However, the basic understanding of the structural dynamics on the atomic scale is still not clear. Using femtosecond electron diffraction, structure factor calculation, and time-dependent density-functional theory molecular dynamic simulation, we reveal the photoinduced ultrafast transition of the local correlated structure in the averaged rocksalt phase of Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5}. The randomly oriented Peierls distortion among unit cells in the averaged rocksalt phase of Ge_{2}Sb_{2}Te_{5} is termed as local correlated structures. The ultrafast suppression of the local Peierls distortions in the individual unit cell gives rise to a local structure change from the rhombohedral to the cubic geometry within ∼0.3  ps. In addition, the impact of the carrier relaxation and the large number of vacancies to the ultrafast structural response is quantified and discussed. Our Letter provides new microscopic insights into contributions of the local correlated structure to the transient structural and optical responses in phase change materials. Moreover, we stress the significance of femtosecond electron diffraction in revealing the local correlated structure in the subunit cell and the link between the local correlated structure and physical properties in functional materials with complex microstructures.

Picosecond infrared laser driven sample delivery for simultaneous liquid-phase and gas-phase electron diffraction studies.

Here, we report on a new approach based on laser driven molecular beams that provides simultaneously nanoscale liquid droplets and gas-phase sample delivery for femtosecond electron diffraction studies. The method relies on Picosecond InfraRed Laser (PIRL) excitation of vibrational modes to strongly drive phase transitions under energy confinement by a mechanism referred to as Desorption by Impulsive Vibrational Excitation (DIVE). This approach is demonstrated using glycerol as the medium with selective excitation of the OH stretch region for energy deposition. The resulting plume was imaged with both an ultrafast electron gun and a pulsed bright-field optical microscope to characterize the sample source simultaneously under the same conditions with time synchronization equivalent to sub-micrometer spatial resolution in imaging the plume dynamics. The ablation front gives the expected isolated gas phase, whereas the trailing edge of the plume is found to consist of nanoscale liquid droplets to thin films depending on the excitation conditions. Thus, it is possible by adjusting the timing to go continuously from probing gas phase to solution phase dynamics in a single experiment with 100% hit rates and very low sample consumption (<100 nl per diffraction image). This approach will be particularly interesting for biomolecules that are susceptible to denaturation in turbulent flow, whereas PIRL–DIVE has been shown to inject molecules as large as proteins into the gas phase fully intact. This method opens the door as a general approach to atomically resolving solution phase chemistry as well as conformational dynamics of large molecular systems and allow separation of the solvent coordinate on the dynamics of interest.

Ultrafast visualization of incipient plasticity in dynamically compressed matter

Plasticity is ubiquitous and plays a critical role in material deformation and damage; it inherently involves the atomistic length scale and picosecond time scale. A fundamental understanding of the elastic-plastic deformation transition, in particular, incipient plasticity, has been a grand challenge in high-pressure and high-strain-rate environments, impeded largely by experimental limitations on spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we report femtosecond MeV electron diffraction measurements visualizing the three-dimensional (3D) response of single-crystal aluminum to the ultrafast laser-induced compression. We capture lattice transitioning from a purely elastic to a plastically relaxed state within 5 ps, after reaching an elastic limit of ~25 GPa. Our results allow the direct determination of dislocation nucleation and transport that constitute the underlying defect kinetics of incipient plasticity. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations show good agreement with the experiment and provide an atomic-level description of the dislocation-mediated plasticity.

Intrinsic energy flow in laser-excited 3d ferromagnets

Ultrafast magnetization dynamics are governed by energy flow between electronic, magnetic, and lattice degrees of freedom. A quantitative understanding of these dynamics must be based on a model that agrees with experimental results for all three subsystems. However, ultrafast dynamics of the lattice remain largely unexplored experimentally. Here, we combine femtosecond electron diffraction experiments of the lattice dynamics with energy-conserving atomistic spin dynamics (ASD) simulations and ab-initio calculations to study the intrinsic energy flow in the 3d ferromagnets cobalt (Co) and iron (Fe). The simulations yield a good description of experimental data, in particular an excellent description of our experimental results for the lattice dynamics. We find that the lattice dynamics are influenced significantly by the magnetization dynamics due to the energy cost of demagnetization. Our results highlight the role of the spin system as the dominant heat sink in the first hundreds of femtoseconds. Together with previous findings for nickel [Zahn et al., Phys. Rev. Research 3, 023032 (2021)], our work demonstrates that energy-conserving ASD simulations provide a general and consistent description of the laser-induced dynamics in all three elemental 3d ferromagnets.

Dynamic structural views in solar energy materials by femtosecond electron diffraction

Solar materials convert light into other forms of energy through excited state processes occurring on ultrafast time and atomic length scales. Understanding and controlling such nonequilibrium processes is essential for applications ranging from photovoltaics to photocatalysis. These processes are commonly studied by transient optical techniques, which resolve charge carrier dynamics. However, optical spectroscopy does not directly probe the atomic-scale motions that play a central role in the ultimate functionality of these materials. Filling this missing gap, ultrafast electron and x-ray scattering techniques enable monitoring of structural dynamics in materials with femtosecond time resolution. Here, we focus on the use of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) techniques to probe photoinduced energy conversion dynamics in solar energy materials. First, we discuss the use of UED as an ultrafast lattice thermometer allowing a direct probe of nonradiative relaxations such as hot carrier cooling and Auger recombination. Second, we present a time-resolved atomic pair distribution function analysis enabled by UED, which uncovers lattice deformations arising from excitation localization in materials. Finally, we provide an outlook looking toward new approaches for resolving in situ energy conversion dynamics and uncovering structure–property relationships in solar energy materials.

Lattice dynamics and ultrafast energy flow between electrons, spins, and phonons in a 3d ferromagnet

The ultrafast dynamics of magnetic order in a ferromagnet are governed by the interplay between electronic, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom. In order to obtain a microscopic understanding of ultrafast demagnetization, information on the response of all three subsystems is required. A consistent description of demagnetization and microscopic energy flow, however, is still missing. Here, we combine a femtosecond electron diffraction study of the ultrafast lattice response of nickel to laser excitation with ab initio calculations of the electron-phonon interaction and energy-conserving atomistic spin dynamics simulations. Our model is in agreement with the observed lattice dynamics and previously reported electron and magnetization dynamics. Our approach reveals that the spin system is the dominating heat sink in the initial few hundreds of femtoseconds and implies a transient non-thermal state of the spins. Our results provide a clear picture of the microscopic energy flow between electronic, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom on ultrafast timescales and constitute a foundation for theoretical descriptions of demagnetization that are consistent with the dynamics of all three subsystems.

Exchange-Striction Driven Ultrafast Nonthermal Lattice Dynamics in NiO.

We use femtosecond electron diffraction to study ultrafast lattice dynamics in the highly correlated antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor NiO. Using the scattering vector (Q) dependence of Bragg diffraction, we introduce Q-resolved effective temperatures describing the transient lattice. We identify a nonthermal lattice state with preferential displacement of O compared to Ni ions, which occurs within ∼0.3  ps and persists for 25ps. We associate this with transient changes to the AFM exchange striction-induced lattice distortion, supported by the observation of a transient Q asymmetry of Friedel pairs. Our observation highlights the role of spin-lattice coupling in routes towards ultrafast control of spin order.

Dynamic lattice distortions driven by surface trapping in semiconductor nanocrystals

Nonradiative processes limit optoelectronic functionality of nanocrystals and curb their device performance. Nevertheless, the dynamic structural origins of nonradiative relaxations in such materials are not understood. Here, femtosecond electron diffraction measurements corroborated by atomistic simulations uncover transient lattice deformations accompanying radiationless electronic processes in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals. Investigation of the excitation energy dependence in a core/shell system shows that hot carriers created by a photon energy considerably larger than the bandgap induce structural distortions at nanocrystal surfaces on few picosecond timescales associated with the localization of trapped holes. On the other hand, carriers created by a photon energy close to the bandgap of the core in the same system result in transient lattice heating that occurs on a much longer 200 picosecond timescale, dominated by an Auger heating mechanism. Elucidation of the structural deformations associated with the surface trapping of hot holes provides atomic-scale insights into the mechanisms deteriorating optoelectronic performance and a pathway towards minimizing these losses in nanocrystal devices.

Signatures of electronic and nuclear coherences in ultrafast molecular x-ray and electron diffraction.

Femtosecond x-ray and electron diffraction hold promise to image the evolving structures of single molecules. We present a unified quantum-electrodynamical formulation of diffraction signals, based on the exact many-body nuclear + electronic wavefunction that can be extracted from quantum chemistry simulations. This gives a framework for analyzing various approximate molecular dynamics simulations. We show that the complete description of ultrafast diffraction signals contains interesting contributions involving mixed elastic and inelastic scattered photons that are usually masked by other larger contributions and are neglected. These terms include overlaps of nuclear wavepackets between different electronic states that provide an electronic decoherence mechanism and are important for the time-resolved imaging of conical intersections.

Strong-field induced fragmentation and isomerization of toluene probed by ultrafast femtosecond electron diffraction and mass spectrometry.

We investigate the fragmentation and isomerization of toluene molecules induced by strong-field ionization with a femtosecond near-infrared laser pulse. Momentum-resolved coincidence time-of-flight ion mass spectrometry is used to determine the relative yield of different ionic products and fragmentation channels as a function of laser intensity. Ultrafast electron diffraction is used to capture the structure of the ions formed on a picosecond time scale by comparing the diffraction signal with theoretical predictions. Through the combination of the two measurements and theory, we are able to determine the main fragmentation channels and to distinguish between ions with identical mass but different structures. In addition, our diffraction measurements show that the independent atom model, which is widely used to analyze electron diffraction patterns, is not a good approximation for diffraction from ions. We show that the diffraction data is in very good agreement with ab initio scattering calculations.

Anisotropic Nonequilibrium Lattice Dynamics of Black Phosphorus.

Black phosphorus has recently attracted significant attention for its highly anisotropic properties. A variety of ultrafast optical spectroscopies has been applied to probe the carrier response to photoexcitation, but the complementary lattice response has remained unaddressed. Here we employ femtosecond electron diffraction to explore how the structural anisotropy impacts the lattice dynamics after photoexcitation. We observe two time scales in the lattice response, which we attribute to electron–phonon and phonon–phonon thermalization. Pronounced differences between armchair and zigzag directions are observed, indicating a nonthermal state of the lattice lasting up to ∼60 ps. This nonthermal state is characterized by a modified anisotropy of the atomic vibrations compared to equilibrium. Our findings provide insights in both electron–phonon as well as phonon–phonon coupling and bear direct relevance for any application of black phosphorus in nonequilibrium conditions.

Dynamical Slowing-Down in an Ultrafast Photoinduced Phase Transition.

Complex systems, which consist of a large number of interacting constituents, often exhibit universal behavior near a phase transition. A slowdown of certain dynamical observables is one such recurring feature found in a vast array of contexts. This phenomenon, known as critical slowing-down, is well studied mostly in thermodynamic phase transitions. However, it is less understood in highly nonequilibrium settings, where the time it takes to traverse the phase boundary becomes comparable to the timescale of dynamical fluctuations. Using transient optical spectroscopy and femtosecond electron diffraction, we studied a photoinduced transition of a model charge-density-wave (CDW) compound LaTe_{3}. We observed that it takes the longest time to suppress the order parameter at the threshold photoexcitation density, where the CDW transiently vanishes. This finding can be captured by generalizing the time-dependent Landau theory to a system far from equilibrium. The experimental observation and theoretical understanding of dynamical slowing-down may offer insight into other general principles behind nonequilibrium phase transitions in many-body systems.

High flow rate nanofluidics for in-liquid electron microscopy and diffraction

We introduce a nanofluidic platform that can be used to carry out femtosecond electron diffraction (FED) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements in liquid samples or in-liquid specimens, respectively. The nanofluidic cell (NFC) system presented herein has been designed to withstand high sample refreshing rates (over one kilohertz), a prerequisite to succeed with FED experiments in our lab. Short beam paths, below 1 μm, in combination with ultrathin membranes (less than 100 nm thick) are necessary conditions for in-liquid FED and TEM studies due to the strongly interacting nature of electrons. Depending on the application, the beam path in our NFC can be tuned between 50 nm and 10 μm with ultrathin stoichiometric silicon nitride (Si3N4) windows as thin as 20 nm. Stoichiometric Si3N4 has been selected to reduce membrane bulging owing to its higher tensile stress and transparency in the UV–vis–NIR region to allow for laser excitation in FED experiments. Key design parameters and improvements made over previous NFC systems are discussed, and some preliminary electron images obtained by 200 kV scanning TEM are presented.

Towards understanding triiodide photochemistry in the solid state by femtosecond electron diffraction

The photochemistry of the triiodide anion has been investigated by femtosecond electron diffraction. The time-resolved signal indicates the presence of reaction products and large-amplitude coherent motion produced by participating species. To reconstruct the atomic detail of the reaction and identify the major contributors to the detected signal, we outline the approach for atomic-level reconstruction.

Condensation of ground state from a supercooled phase in the Si(111)-(4 × 1) → (8 × 2)-indium atomic wire system.

Strong optical irradiation of indium atomic wires on a Si(111) surface causes the nonthermal structural transition from the (8 × 2) reconstructed ground state to an excited (4 × 1) state. The immediate recovery of the system to the ground state is hindered by an energy barrier for the collective motion of the indium atoms along the reaction coordinate from the (4 × 1) to the (8 × 2) state. This metastable, supercooled state can only recover through nucleation of the ground state at defects like adsorbates or step edges. Subsequently, a recovery front propagates with constant velocity across the surface and the (8 × 2) ground state is reinstated. In a combined femtosecond electron diffraction and photoelectron emission microscopy study, we determined—based on the step morphology—a velocity of this recovery front of ∼100 m/s.
